This Week at Mojave

March 12, 2005 - Some weeks this airport is rather dead - at least to someone watching flight activity - and other weeks it's knock-your-socks-off exciting. In between, are the weeks like this past one where a number of small but interesting things happen.

FTA has been reactivating ex-Southwest 737 N104SW and Viking Aviation bid and received the contract for painting it in the colors of TranSky, the new operator. So who is Transky? The painters said they thought it was an operator in Nigeria. Searches of Google, airliners.net and jetphotos.net revealed nothing. Comments invited...

With FRI/NTPS taking over the Rotary Rocket High-bay hangar, the Roton had to move out. Plans are still in-work to move the Roton down to Classic Rotors in Ramona, this time by long-line under a Heavylift Skycrane. The long line (250') should solve the oscillation problems that plagued the first attempt, which used a 15' line under an Army Reserve CH-47. Meanwhile, tie-down space was generously donated by the flight school at Mojave, Viking Aviation (and right next to the Mercy hangar!).

Aeros Corporation's Model 40B "Sky Dragon" flew a couple of touch-and-goes down Rwy 26 on Thursday, 3/10. Aeros is a fomerly Soviet Russian blimp design house that now makes its headquarters in Tarzana, CA, with hangar facilities out at San Bernadino.
